Man wanted in home invasion turns self in

A Brookhaven man, on the run since early Tuesday morning, turned himself in Monday in connection with a home invasion in Monticello that left his alleged accomplice dead.

Michael Alford, 34, of 995 Highway 84 W., is being charged with home invasion, burglary of a dwelling and arson.

He turned himself in following a manhunt that involved the cooperation of the Lawrence and Lincoln County sheriff’s departments.

The search for Alford began after a suspect escaped the scene of the home invasion in Monticello last Tuesday morning despite being shot at by the homeowner, David Maxwell, as the man sped away in a pickup truck.

Maxwell shot and killed the other man involved in the home invasion, Matthew James Javor, 30, of Ruth.

The arson charge against Alford is in connection with the burning of the getaway truck, which was set on fire sometime Wednesday, according to Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames.

Alford’s sister negotiated Alford’s surrender to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, according to Lawrence County Under-Sheriff Willie Wallace. The sister picked up Alford and brought him back to the station, where he turned himself in.

Alford’s motorcycle was found in Pearl River County, Wallace added.

“It’s speculation to say that he was staying in Pearl River County all this time. However, it took awhile for his sister to return with Alford,” said Wallace.

“It’s a good day for everyone involved. It’s good to have this incident over,” Wallace added.

Alford has been cooperating with Lawrence County officials since his arrest, Wallace said.
