Natchez Cathedral entertains BA Cougars
Brookhaven Academy (0-3), under the direction of second-year coach Blake Purvis, fell to the Centreville Academy Tigers 48-7 last week at R. M. “Red” Stuard Field.
This week, the Cougars will invade Natchez to begin district action against a new divisional opponent, the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave, at D’Evereaux Stadium.
The Green Wave (2-1), coached by Ron Rushing, joined the MAIS ranks this season after winning the Class 1A state championship in MHSAA last season. Cathedral lost to MAIS football powerhouse Jackson Prep 49-17 last week in Jackson.
BA’s top offensive performer last week was junior quarterback Madison Smith, who completed 7-of-19 passes for 77 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 22 yards on 16 carries. Senior receiver Ross Felder led with four catches for 83 yards.
Defensively, senior Roger Rushing led the Cougars with nine tackles and junior Connor Griffin had 7.5 tackles and had a long interception return where he broke several tackles.
My prediction: The Green Wave passing attack will be too much for BA to handle as Cathedral prevails 49-12.
