Lady Cobras triumphs over Hazlehurst, boys fall
HAZLEHURST- The Wesson Cobras traveled north on Highway 51 to face the Hazlehurst Indians for a big District matchup in Region 7-3A basketball action Tuesday night.
In the girls contest, the Lady Cobras defeated to the Lady Indians with a final score of 58-48.
In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras fell in a close game to the Indians with a final score of 69-71.
The Cobras will travel to Meadville to play the Franklin County Bulldogs Friday night for another key division contest. Varsity teams begin play at 6 p.m. for the girls and the boys play at 7:30.
Wesson 58, Hazlehurst 48
The Lady Cobras (11-13, 3-4) beat the Lady Indians (6-12, 4-2) Tuesday night with a final score of 58-48 in district play.
It was a team effort by the Lady Cobras with senior Kayla Britt, junior Jashia Smith and sophomores Tashay Glasper and Aurianna Vaughn all scoring 13 points each. Junior Carnesha Green scored 6 points. The Lady Cobras were 18/30 in free throw action.
For the Lady Indians, D. Davis was the top scorer with 33 points. The Lady Indians were 9/11 from the free throw line.
Wesson coach Rusty Newman commented, “This was a good team win for us tonight. We executed well offensively and did a good job of rebounding. Our defense did not give them second chance opportunities. ”
Hazlehurst 71, Wesson 69
The Wesson Cobras (18-5, 5-2) suffered a tough loss to the Hazlehurst Indians (3-12, 2-4) in district play Tuesday night with a final score of 69-71.
Top Cobra players included junior Anthony Jones with 22 points and senior Dartavious Dixon with 13 points. Other top Cobra players were sophomore Eric Rhymes with 12 points and senior Farrod Green with 10. The Cobras were 17/25 in free throws. Top players for the Indians were Kenje with 15 points and Zmaya with 14 points. The Indians had an average of 20/31 in free throw action.
“We played sluggish for most of the game,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We picked up our intensity in the fourth quarter and took a small lead after being down by 11 but miscues and foul trouble killed us down the stretch. We have got to regroup and play better.”
