Lincoln County Superintendent Terry Brister took time out of Monday’s school board meeting to recognize the board members and show a little appreciation for the work they do for the district.

“I’ve been honored that I’ve been able to listen to nearly every superintendent in this state at one time or another over the years,” Brister said, “and, I’ve talked to a lot of them about board members, and I’m so proud that we have the group that we do, because a lot of those superintendents say they dread going to board meetings because they already know what the fight is going to be.” He said his board members work together well and have respect for one another.

“I’m really blessed to have people on the board that don’t complain, that aren’t searching for something to be wrong and that respect each other’s boundaries,” Brister said.

Brister gave each board member certificates of appreciation and specially made pens crafted by Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing.

In other business, Cheryl Shelby presented the board with financial statements for January 2014 for board approval.

Then assistant superintendent Letha Presley reported to the board on Title I and Title II funding to be accepted.

Presley told the board that the district will receive $583,257 in Title I funds and $131,600 in Title II funds from the U.S. Department of Education. She explained that the funds will be used to purchase needed classroom equipment, curriculum and pre-testing for MCT2 state testing and provide professional development and preparation for teachers in the transition to Common Core – a new set of standards that is intended to get the state’s students up to par with others across the nation.

In other business board members:

• Approved the request of Presley to hire a current bus driver in the district as the driver for the life skills class at Enterprise Attendance Center once a week.

• Accepted a request for a bus turnaround.

• Accepted resignations.

• Approved a request for family medical leave.

• Gave Stan Long permission to have his secretary become a notary public.

• Approved Coach Willie Brumfield at West Lincoln selling old football jerseys as a fundraiser.

• Approved allowing Brumfield to hold spring peewee football camp for elementary grades K-6 at West Lincoln Attendance Center.
