Lady Cobras beat Crystal Springs, Boys fall

CRYSTAL SPRINGS – The Wesson Cobras traveled north on Interstate 55 to Crystal Springs Friday night to face the Crystal Springs Tigers in Region 7-3A basketball action.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cobras captured their first district win with a final score of 41-23.

In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras suffered their first district loss to the Tigers with a final score of 52-73.

In JV boys’ action, the Tigers outplayed the Cobras to gain a 46-24 win.

Wesson travels to Wilkinson County Tuesday night. The varsity teams begin play at 6 for the girls, and the boys play at 7:30 p.m. in Woodville.

Wesson 41, Crystal Springs 23 

The Lady Cobras (9-12, 1-3) led the Lady Tigers (1-2 in district) Friday night and won their first district win with a final score of 41-23.

Top Lady Cobra player, junior Jashia Smith, scored a total of 20 points and had a total of 11 rebounds, two seals and one assist. Sophomore Aurianna Vaughn was another top scorer for the Lady Cobras with eight points, one steal and three rebounds. Senior Kayla Britt played aggressive defensive with a total of five steals, 10 rebounds and seven points. The Lady Cobras were 8/14 in free throw action.

The top player of the game for the Lady Tigers was Jakiyah Johnson with nine points, one steal and one rebound. Aireyonna James was the top defender with six rebounds, two steals and four points. The Lady Tigers were 4/13 in free throw action.

“The girls executed well on both ends of the floor,” Wesson Coach Rusty Newman said. “This was a big win for us, and I’m proud of the girls.”

Crystal Springs 73, Wesson 52 

The Wesson Cobras (16-4, 3-1) suffered their first loss in district play to the Crystal Springs Tigers (4-1 in district play) Friday night with a final score of 52-73.

The Cobras took the lead at the beginning of the game and shot well from the outside with an impressive eight three-pointers but lost the momentum late in the contest and couldn’t pull the win.

Top Cobra scorer was junior Anthony Jones who scored 16 points, had eight rebounds and one steal. Sophomore Will Hulon was another top shooter with 13 points, which included four three-pointers. The Cobras were 8/15 in free throws.

The Tigers top all round player was Zavion King who had a point total of 19 with four rebounds and two steals. Miguel Powell was another top scorer with 15 points, two rebounds and five steals. The Tigers had an average of 13/22 in free throw action.

“We just didn’t have it tonight,” Newman said after the game. “We shot the ball well early on which helped keep us in it in the first half, but we played terrible defensively and Crystal Springs made us pay for it. We have to learn from this loss and understand the importance of defending. Hope we can bounce back and play better as district play continues.”

In junior varsity boys’ action,  the Cobras boys’ team suffer a disappointing 46-24 loss to the Tigers. Arthur Harris scored 11 points. Top Cobra rebounder was Randy Hooker.

Malik Davis was the top scorer for the Tigers with a point total of 13, and DJ Coleman was top defender with 12 rebounds.
