Memorial Day event slated at govt. bldg.

Monday, the VFW will be hosting its annual Memorial’s Day program in front of the Lincoln County/Brookhaven Government Complex. The ceremony begins at 10:00 A.M.

For many, Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer, complete with cookouts and picnics. But VFW Commander Col. Ken Powell wants to remind everyone to take a moment to recognize those who have sacrificed their lives for the U.S.

“I am humbled by the people who are willing to potentially lay down their lives and unfortunately some people have had to,” he said.

Powell also stressed the importance of recognizing the families of those who have died serving their countries. He said the families make sacrifices as much as those in the military, but people tend to forget about the families of the servicemen who have died.

“There’s a life left behind,” he said. “They’re forever altered.

The event will feature Sgt. John Emory and Col. Amos Parker Jr. Emory is a Korean veteran and was the head of the Dixie Division of the 155th. Parker is the 154th regimental commander of the regimental training institute based at Camp Shelby.

The program will also include a posting of the Memorial Day colors by the Patriot Riders and a reading of the names on the memorial. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be serving lemonade and distributing buddy poppies, paper poppies in memory of all those who have died in battle.

Limited seating will be available. Last year, more than people were present for the program.
