Lady Hornets secure split in LC tourney
MONTICELLO – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets secured a split in Lawrence County’s softball tournament Saturday.
The Lady Hornets clobbered the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 12-0 in the first game and fell to the Brookhaven Lady Panthers 2-1 in an eight-inning contest in the second game.
The Lady Hornets (6-3, 2-0), coached by Jan Delaughter, will be in action today as they visit Enterprise battle the Lady Jackets. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.
Lady Hornets 12, Lady Bulldogs 0
The Lady Hornets captured an early 10-0 lead and never looked back. Loyd Star added two more runs in the fourth inning to secure the win in five innings of action.
Makenzie Smith (4K, 0BB) and Ali Gartman (4K, 1BB) pitched two innings each to collect the win on the rubber for Loyd Star.
Emilee Wallace suffered the setback for Franklin County with five strikeouts and two walks.
Gartman powered the Lady Hornets with a homerun. Megan Norton and Julie Smith contributed a double and a single each. Shelby Smith provided a triple and Madison Jones had a double. Abigail Thornton hit safely.
Tabitha Thompson recorded the only hit for the Lady Bulldogs with a single.
Lady Panthers 2, Lady Hornets 1
Loyd Star and Brookhaven battled in a defensive contest with the Lady Hornets scoring their only run in the first. The Lady Panthers fought to tie the contest in the fifth inning at 1-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Brookhaven scored the winning run on Jadeyn Fuller’s walk-off double. The game had gone to an international tiebreaker.
Katherine Shell was the winning pitcher for the Lady Panthers with eight strikeouts and one walk.
McKenzie Smith suffered the setback on the rubber for Loyd Star with six strikeouts and one walk.
Abigail Thornton directed the Lady Hornets with a double. Norton and Gartman provided a single each.
Fuller led Brookhaven with a double. Madison Thompson contributed three singles. Tia Bussey and Macy Ziskin had a single apiece.
