Panther lifters finish strong in state
The Ole Brook Power Panthers finished in sixth place in Class 5A State Powerlifting competition in Jackson Saturday.
The Panthers had several players to finish strong in their weight class – three players captured third place to clinch bronze medals. Two lifters finished fourth and one placed seventh.
Kenneth Dixon finished third in 181-pound weight class with a total of 1,185 pounds. Dixon had a personal best in squat of 405 pounds. His bench was 245 pounds and in deadlift he lifted 535 pounds.
Kenneth Bellamy placed third in 148-pound weight class with a total of 990 pounds. Bellamy finished with two personal bests – 235 pounds in bench and 425 pounds in deadlift. He squat was 330 pounds.
Stephen Springfield took home third place in 242-pound weight class with a total of 1,480 pounds. He finished with 620 pounds in squat, 310 pounds on bench and 550 pounds on deadlift.
Jay Trunner finished fourth in 198-pound weight class with a total of 1,155 pounds. Trunner finished with 405 pounds in squat, 235 pounds on bench and 525 pounds in deadlift.
Kieran Williams placed fourth in 275-pound weight class with a total of 1,095 pounds. Williams finished with 405 pounds in squat, 240 pounds on bench and 450 pounds in deadlift.
Trace Clopton finished seventh in 308-pound weight class with a total of 1,200 pounds. Clopton finished with 485 pounds in squat, 265 pounds on bench and 450 pounds in deadlift.
“I’m proud of how the guys competed on a long day of lifting,” said Brookhaven coach Russ Britt. “I will miss the three seniors, Jon Mark Mathis, Jay Trunner and Stephen Springfield, they were all four-year guys. This season we exceeded most of our goals and narrowly missed the others.
“Next season we return the core of our guys and we will have them ready to go,” said Britt. “I’d like to specifically thank Coach Bland for all he does with the guys and for the guys, Todd Peavey for allowing us to use the KDMC facility, our booster club, and all the parents who helped make this a successful season.”
