The fourth Friday and Saturday in October are two days area artists will likely want to circle in red for an upcoming series of painting workshops sponsored by the Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild and The Art Barn.

The two organizations have combined efforts to bring Sarasota, Florida-based artist K.D. Tobin to Brookhaven as part of his yearly tour through the southeastern U.S. demonstrating products from Golden Artist Colors Inc. “”Golden Paints has never done a workshop in Brookhaven,” said Ava Jane Newell of the Art Barn. “We’ve had artists but never a company before. We’ve never had a company to come with their products to show how to use them.

“They will supply all the things for the workshop except a limited number of personal supplies,” Newell added.

“Whether you’re a beginning artist or you’ve been at this for years, you’re going to get a great deal out of what Mr. Tobin has to share,” said BRAG President Sue Minter.

Golden Artist Colors instructor Tobin is a painter, sculptor, filmmaker, writer and designer of interiors, furniture and landscapes.

The Connecticut native brings 30 years of experience in acrylics and mixed media to his classes. He painted and exhibited for 10 years in the Los Angeles area before relocating to Sarasota, and his artwork is in many private and corporate collections in the United States and in Europe.

He will present three workshops over the course of the weekend in Brookhaven. All classes will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 215 W. Cherokee St.

Kicking things off Friday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon will be <cTypeface:Bold>Workshop One<cTypeface:Plain> – “Free A to Z Acrylic and A Whole Lot More.” This introductory seminar is free, although registration in advance is required.

The class will cover pigments and various types of acrylic paints and related media. Included will be a discussion of acrylic paint that stays wet longer and can be worked like oil. Free samples and an information packet will be provided to each participant.

Next on the agenda will be <cTypeface:Bold>Workshop Two<cTypeface:Plain> – “Glazed, Dazed, Crazed and Amazed” from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday. The cost for this more in-depth class is $50 with registration in advance and a $25 deposit required.

The workshop will focus on glazing liquids, blending, wet-into-wet techniques and crackle paste as well as the use of alternative surfaces. Participants will learn how to use modern materials to achieve the look of old masters’ work.

Workshop Two is suited for all skill levels, and artists need only bring a brush or two, a palette knife or two, paper towels, a small container for water and a notebook and pencils. Golden Paints, gels and mediums and the necessary substrates will be provided.

Rounding out the weekend is <cTypeface:Bold>Workshop Three<cTypeface:Plain> – “The Whole Shebang” on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost for the daylong event is $125, and registration in advance and a $50 deposit are required. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch.

“This is the one you don’t want to miss! We will cover it all in one day,” says the Golden Paints description for the workshop, adding, “from surfaces to gel skins to the amazing bling, there is something here for everyone.”

This workshop is geared for painters, mixed media artists and collagists. Included will be “surface treatments using light molding paste, molding paste, micaceous iron oxide, faux encaustic, tar gel, pumice gel, absorbent ground and so many more,” according to Golden Paints. “We will make “Gel Skins” in addition to transferring imagery directly into substrates using a variety of Golden products.”

Workshop Three is suited for artists at all levels of skill. Paints, gels, mediums, wet and dry samples and substrates will be provided, and drawings will be held for prizes through the day.

Saturday participants will only need to bring a few personal supplies including a brush or two, a small palette knife or two, a small container for water, a roll of paper towels and a few favorite drawing elements such as colored pencils, pastels, etc.
