Lady Hornets split tourney action

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets saw their 14-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as they secured a split in softball action during the Lady Hornets softball invitational tournament at Jan Smith Delaughter Field.
The Lady Hornets opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over Salem, before falling to the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 4-0 in game two.
“We played flat today,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “Lawrence County played and pitched well. Our girls just did not come ready to play.”
The Lady Hornets (16-2, 5-0) will be in action Tuesday as they host Bassfield again at home since Bassfield’s field is under construction. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Loyd Star 4, Salem 3
Mackenzie Smith was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets with no strikeouts and two walks. Ali Gartman (1K, 0BB) started for Loyd Star.
Darian Dykes suffered the loss for the Lady Wildcats with one strikeout and no walks.
Madison Jones paced the Lady Hornets at the plate with two singles. Lexie Butler ripped a triple. Megan Norton, Ali Gartman, Abigail Thornton and Raigan Smith contributed a double apiece. Brooks Rushing hit safely.
Zoie Bridges was the leader at the plate for Salem with a double and a single. Rachel Bond and Dykes had a single each.
Lawrence Co. 4, Loyd Star 0
Elizabeth Smith tossed the victory for the Lady Cougars with four strikeouts and one walk.
Kelsey McCullough absorbed the setback for the Lady Hornets with three strikeouts and one walk.
Norton was the top hitter on Loyd Star’s offense with a double. Rushing had a single.
Cheyenne Long directed the Lady Cougars at the plate with a double. Hitting safely were Alexsundria Thomas, Alyssa Pendergrass, Jazmin Thomas, Callie Fortenberry and Jamie Martin.
