The Brookhaven Panthers remembered the whipping that Loyd Star Hornets put on them last week in the Lawrence County tournament and returned the favor back to the Hornets Thursday night 13-3 victory in non-divisional baseball action.
“This was a good win for our guys,” said BHS coach Randy Spring. “We hit the ball hard and did a lot of good things on offense to give support to our pitcher. I was really pleased with my guys effort. Hopefully this is a good sign that we are heading in the right direction.”
The Panthers (7-4, 1-0) will be in action today as they travel to Jackson for district doubleheader against Wingfield. Game time is set to start at 5 p.m. for Game One.
The Hornets (5-4, 1-0) will also be returning to action today as they host Region 6-2A foe, Bassfield Yellowjackets. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
Brookhaven 13, Loyd Star 3
Reed Jones was the winning pitcher for the Panthers with three strikeouts and one walk.
Levi Redd suffered the setback for the Hornets with two strikeouts and four walks.
“I am very disappointed in our defensive executions right now,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “We must start making plays behind our pitchers who are giving a great effort on the mound. We need to regroup and get ready for our second district game today against Bassfield.”
Penn Wilson directed Brookhaven’s offense with a double and a single. Michael Lambert provided two singles. Hitting safely were Blaine Moak, Brett Spring Reed Jones, Nick Kesler and Landon McCullough.
Seth Farmer was the top hitter for the Hornets with a triple. Brett Calcote and Peyton Flowers hit a single apiece.
