Southwest basketball standouts Twymond Howard, Jaylen Moore and Deione Weeks were honored with post-season awards at the recent end-of-season coaches’ meeting in Jackson.

Howard was named All-Region and 1st Team All-State and was selected to play in next month’s MACJC All-Star game. Moore was selected 2nd Team All-State while Weeks was named to the All-Star game. The All-Star game will be played April 10 at East Central Community College.

Howard (6′ 6″, 209), a sophomore forward from Pearl High School, transferred to Southwest at the end of the 2012-13 season from Texas-El Paso. He was tied with Moore for the team lead in scoring with 15.8 points per game and was the team leader in rebounds (9.8). He totaled 14 double-doubles during the season.

Speaking of Howard, Southwest head coach Casey Carter said he “had a very good year for us as everybody expected, averaging just under 16 points per game and almost 10 rebounds per game with numerous double-doubles. He was able to impact our team in several different ways. Instead of just scoring and rebounding, he’s the guy who had a great attitude and great effort every single day.”

In addition to being tied for the team lead in scoring, Moore (5′ 11″, 178), a freshman guard from Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, was tied with Xavion Dillon for the team lead in shooting with 53% (129-245). Carter said Moore “was a good surprise for us. He was a really good player, but to be able to come in and score the ball like he did in our league as a freshman is really impressive. He was one of only two freshmen to make (the All-State team from the South) and with as many good sophomores as there are in the league that speaks highly of him.”

Weeks (6′ 2″, 192), a two-year player for the Bears out of Corinth High School, averaged 11.8 points per game this season. Carter said Weeks “made huge, huge improvements in a lot of different areas (from last season). I think one of them was just him coming to work every day like he was supposed to. This year, I’ve been very encouraged by his production every single day. He shot the ball really well for us this year. He’s going to be a really good player for somebody at the next level.”
