The West Lincoln Bears opened their 2014 baseball season with a 10-0 shutout win over the Salem Wildcats Saturday morning at the Cow Palace.

In the final game of the evening, the Bears overpowered Varnado to grab a 10-0 win over the Louisiana-based Wildcats.

West Lincoln hosted a baseball tournament to begin the season as the South Pike Eagles, Salem Wildcats and the Varnado Wildcats out of Angie Louisiana participated in the event. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held at South Pike in Magnolia but was relocated after South Pike officials stated that their baseball field was still under water after the huge downpour last week.

The Bears (2-0) will return to action Friday, as they will participate in a new version of the Lincoln County Tournament, which will have some new faces involved like Lawrence County and McComb. The annual tournament has been renamed the Lincoln County Invitational.

West Lincoln 10, Salem 0 

The Bears did not let an early morning game affect their focus as they drilled the Wildcats 6-0 in the first inning and continued to roll in the innings afterwards by scoring one run each to end the contest in five innings of action.

Senior Brady Wilson was the winning pitcher for the Bears, claiming a no-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Robert Brumfield suffered the loss for Salem with no strikeouts and three walks.

Jeremy Burns provided the offensive punch to led West Lincoln with a home run. Tanner Boutwell ripped a double. Hitting safely were Alex Neal, Chase Buckles, Brice Temple and Wilson.

“It is good to win the first game of the season,” said West Lincoln coach Steve Barrington. “Brady Wilson threw really well and managed to get good hit when we had runners on base. Overall, I was proud of the guys’ effort. Everyone played well and did not strikeout.”

West Lincoln 10, Varnado 0 

The Bears quickly took care of business in the final game to capture the second win of the season in five innings of work.

Tanner Boutwell was the winning pitcher for West Lincoln with five strikeouts and one walk.

Errol Varnado suffered the loss for the Louisiana-based Wildcats with two strikeouts and no walks.

Wilson powered the Bears with two home runs. Burns continued the offensive onslaught with a double and a single. Ty Forman ripped a triple. Austin Burris had a double. Temple, Boutwell and Neal hit safely.

Jalen led Varnado’s offense with two singles. Kyle Slocum hit a single.
