Bassfield clobbers West Lincoln

BASSFIELD – Junior power forward Jamal Peters pumped in a game-high 28 points to help his Bassfield Yellowjackets capture the Region 7-2A tournament crown after clobbering the West Lincoln Bears 62-42 Friday night in the boys’ title game at Bassfield’s gymnasium.
In the girls’ title game, the Amite County Lady Trojans dominated the East Marion Lady Eagles to win 65-31.
West Lincoln returns home to host the opening round of the MHSAA state tournament Tuesday. The Bears (24-5) battle Taylorsville, starting at 7 p.m. at Jack Case Gymnasium.
Bassfield 62, West Lincoln 42
Lincoln County and Jefferson County basketball fans gathered to witness this tough match-up as the Bears and Yellowjackets provided a physical battle.
Prior to the opening tip, the Bears entered the game with heavy hearts as one of their teammate suffered a sudden family tragedy, just moments prior to leaving for the game. With a sign of respect and with sincerely thoughts and prayers, the members of the team carried out their teammate’s game jersey as sign of respect.
In the opening quarter, Bassfield came out strong and quickly jumped on the Bears to claim an 11-8 lead.
In the second quarter, the Bears rose to the challenge and battled back into the contest by outscoring the Yellowjackets 18-9 to carry a 26-20 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets came out on fire and overpowered the Bears with stiff defensive pressure in the third quarter to reclaim the lead at 41-36.
In the fourth quarter, Bassfield continued their offensive scoring onslaught as they powered by the Bears with a 21-6 run to capture their second straight region crown.
Javion Mackabee and Keshaun London were the top offensive scorers for West Lincoln with a team-high 10 points apiece. Mackabee had double-double performance night after collection 13 rebounds. Sam Bivens helped on the boards with seven rebounds and four points.
“This was a very physical game,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “We did not play very well offensively and defensively from the start. We missed several shots and got in early foul trouble as well. Bassfield did a good job taking advantage of our miscues and to took it to us inside. Overall, we need to put this game behind us and start preparing for our game Tuesday.”
Josh Williams was the second leading scorer for the Yellowjackets with 12 points and seven rebounds. Rakiem Booth powered Bassfield on the boards with nine rebounds.
Amite Co. 65, East Marion 31
Destiny Williams was the top scoring leader for the Lady Trojans with 14 points. Dalha Taplin contributed 12 points.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Audrianna Howard with 12 points.
