JACKSON — Brookhaven and Wingfield had to go through two extra sessions in the Wingfield High Gym Tuesday night. Ole Brook used some timely plays on both ends of the floor, claiming a hard-fought 71-67 double-overtime win.

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers were not as fortunate, falling 59-45 to the Wingfield Lady Falcons.

It was the final regular season games for Brookhaven. Wingfield closes their regular season Friday hosting Provine. Brookhaven, Wingfield, along with Natchez and Pearl River Central, begin play in the Region 6-5A tournament Feb. 18-21 at Wingfield.

The Lady Panthers (12-10, 3-3) were succumbed by poor shooting from the floor and charity stripe. Head Coach Freda Craft saw her ball club trail 13-6 after one period and 34-13 at halftime.

“We came out flat to start the game and just could not get into any rhythm,” said Craft. “We missed too many shots underneath and at the free throw line. Too many turnovers.”

Fredericka Fairman led the Lady Panthers with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Chantel Quarles tossed in 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Kynitria Hill had 13 rebounds. Brookhaven had 24 turnovers while shooting 27 percent (17 of 62) from the field and 30 percent (7 of 30) from the charity stripe.

Wingfield (3-15, 3-3), coached by Anita Johnson, will be seeded second in the tournament and will face Brookhaven in the opening round.

The Panthers (20-5, 6-0) claimed the regular season region title and No. 1 seed in next week’s region tournament. Big plays from Fred Trevillion and Shaquan Richardson helped aid Brookhaven in the win.

With Ole Brook trailing 55-53 in regulation, Trevillion had a steal, a basket and a defensive stop to force the first overtime. Richardson’s 4-point (3-pointer and subsequent free throw following a Falcon foul) play with under 2 seconds left in the second overtime put the Panthers ahead for good at 72-68.

Wingfield, coached by Herman Sanders, turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play with time expiring.

“Richardson had struggled all night, but hit the big shots in double overtime to get the win,” said Brookhaven head coach Preston Wilson. “Fred Trevillion and Damarius Brooks stepped up big. It was a hard-fought win. ”

Lazorian McNulty paced Ole Brook with 17 points, followed by Trevillion with 14 points and Brooks with 13 points. Brooks and Khalil Newton each had 7 rebounds. Trevillion, Richardson and Darrian Wilson had 3 assists apiece.
