Junior guard Duane Marshall pumped in a game-high 24 points to lead three players in double figures as West Lincoln secured a sweep over Bassfield in their opening debut in Region 7-2A basketball action Friday night at Jack Case Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Bears came out hot and overpowered the Lady Yellowjackets to claim a 56-35 victory.

In boys’ action, the Bears stomped Bassfield 72-36.

West Lincoln continues Region 7-2A play Tuesday as they prepare to welcome their Lincoln County and new region rivals, the Loyd Star Hornets, for four games. Junior varsity action begins at 4 p.m. The varsity girls are set to start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Bassfield returns home to host Enterprise for three games. The junior varsity boys will tip off at 5 p.m. Varsity action begins at 6 p.m. for the girls, followed by the boys.

West Lincoln 56, Bassfield 35 

The Lady Bears (3-13, 1-0) came out and played their best game of the season as they roared to a 17-6 lead in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, West Lincoln continued their hot shooting and aggressive defensive pressure to claim a 30-15 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Bears overpowered Bassfield by outscoring the Lady Yellowjackets 26-20 to claimed the win in their first region test as Region 7-2A members.

Sophomore forward Hanna Moak poured in a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bears. Senior forward Destiny Allen contributed 15 points, five rebounds and six assists.

“We played our best game of the season tonight,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “I was very pleased with our effort. The girls played hard and together throughout the whole game. Overall, we came ready to play.”

Jolissa Fairley was the top scorer and rebounder for the Lady Yellowjackets (6-6, 1-2) with 10 points and seven rebounds. Daria White helped with nine points.

“We did not play well at all,” said Bassfield coach Sylvia Hall. “We were very cold offensively and defensively. West Lincoln came out ready to play and we could not match their tempo.”

West Lincoln 72, Bassfield 36 

The Bears (14-3, 1-0) had too much firepower and size for the Bassfield Yellowjackets to handle as West Lincoln hammered the Jackets 18-6 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, West Lincoln continued to fuel their high-octane offense as they commanded a 34-9 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Yellowjackets (3-8, 1-2) came out strong and tried to rally, but the Bears continued to roll offensively as they thumped Bassfield 38-27 to capture the win.

Senior center Sam Bivens provided a double-double for the Bears with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Ronnie was West Lincoln second leading scorer with 15 points.

“We came out and set the tone of the game early to start the game,” said Young. “Our defensive pressure created problems for Bassfield and helped offensively by creating turnovers for some easy baskets.”

Rakiem Booth paced the Yellowjackets offense with 14 points. Lavedar Adams and Booth led Bassfield on the boards with six rebounds apiece.

“West Lincoln came out and took it to us,” said Bassfield coach Charlie James. “We came out flat and wasn’t ready to respond West Lincoln’s challenge in the first quarter.

“Overall, the guys played hard, but we missed way too many shots and struggled to get something started offensively and defensively.”

In junior varsity girls’ action, the West Lincoln Lady Bears steam rollered the Lady Yellowjackets 26-10. Sara Jane Doty directed West Lincoln’s offense with nine points. Lillianne Rushing chipped in with seven points.

Joeisha Reese paced the Bassfield girls with eight points.
