A six-year-old Lincoln County girl was accidentally shot and killed with a pellet gun Wednesday.
Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris said Karlianna Brumfield, 6, was accidentally shot when her 13-year-old brother was playing with his pellet gun and the gun went off inside the family home on Brumfield Road in the Enterprise Community.
Immediately after being shot, the girl was transported to the emergency room of the Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb by her mother, according to Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing.
Dr. Scott Smith pronounced the 6-year-old dead at 10:43 a.m., according to McMorris.
Officials with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the matter, and Rushing said no charges are being filed at this time.
“We get about four to five calls a year concerning people injured by pellet guns. But usually the extent of the injury isn’t this severe,” said Rushing. “It’s a tragedy.”
The sheriff’s department received the call at 9:30 a.m., according to Rushing. The shooting is believed to have occurred at approximately 9 a.m.
While these kinds of deaths are unusual, they do happen, said McMorris Thursday.
“This is the first incident that led to a death that I have overseen. It’s certainly not the first time I’ve heard of this happening though,” said McMorris.
Pellet rifles can be used for small game hunting, and some guns have the same speed and power as a 22-rifle. In some states, law enforcement officials have moved to regulate or prohibit the use of these guns.
Police officials advise treating pellet guns like any other firearm.
