Lady Bucs capture tournament crown over Lady Cougars

The Bowling Green Lady Buccaneers overpowered the Brookhaven Lady Cougars with their defensive pressure to capture the tournament title with a 67-47 victory Monday night in the BA’s Christmas Invitational Tournament at John R. Gray Gymnasium.
In the boys’ championship game, the Natchez Trinity Episcopal Saints claimed a 60-47 win over Marshall Academy.
In consolation action, the Canton Academy boys surpass Prairie View 42-36, the Prairie View girls cruised past the Marshall Academy girls 61-49 and the East Rankin boys clobbered the Bowling Green Bucs 56-23.
Brookhaven Academy begins district action Friday as they prepare to visit Natchez to take on the ACCS Rebels for six games. The varsity girls are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
Bowling Green 67, Brookhaven Academy 47
The Lady Bucs and the Lady Cougars provided their basketball fans with plenty of excitement as both continued their tradition of battling one another in a championship contest.
In the opening quarter, Bowling Green came out and applied their aggressive defensive pressure on Brookhaven Academy early to secure a 22-12 lead.
In the second quarter, the Lady Cougars fought back and trimmed into the Lady Bucs but still trailed 40-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Bucs continued their aggressive pressure and outscored the Lady Cougars 27-23 to secured the win.
Senior forward Lindsey Winborne was the offensive leader for the Lady Cougars (9-7) with 15 points and led on the boards with eight rebounds. May Claire White chipped in offensively with 13 points. Hillary Wilson helped on the boards with six rebounds and had five assists. Madison Warren also dished out five assists.
“I am tremendously proud of our girls effort in the second half,” said BA coach Mack Gardner. “We were not looking for a moral victory, but we made great steps in the second half towards being a good basketball team.”
Kristina Jarrell was the top scorer for the Lady Bucs with a game-high 20 points. McKinly Seal contributed 15 points and Katelyn Jenkins added 10 points.
Trinity 60, Marshall 47
Tommy McCoy paced the Saints to the tournament victory over Marshall with 23 points. Dre McCoy provided 13 points and Wyatt Boothe had 10 points.
Dakota Dailey directed Marshall’s offensive with 23 points. Andrew Harrington cashed in 10 points.
Canton 42, Prairie View 36
Canton had three player to score in double figures as Sterling James lead with 11 points. Gerrod Anderson and Kraft McLean chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Dylan Carroll was the top scorer for Prairie View with 15 points.
Prairie View 61, Marshall 49
Dani Anderson led the Prairie View girls with a team-high 21 points. Amery Clark helped with 19 points.
Elizabeth Skelton paced the Marshall girls with 23 points and Blake Martin provided 16 points.
East Rankin 56, Bowling Green 23
Peyton Cross was the offensive leader for East Rankin with 13 points. Trevor Jordan contributed 12 points.
Spencer Graves directed the Buccaneers offense with six points.
