Business director Susan Cochran presented financial reports to Brookhaven School Board members Tuesday night showing that the school district is financially sound.

“The fund balance remains at 22 percent of revenue,” Cochran said, “That’s what is required by state law. And, an audit revealed no significant issues.”

She said the financial report for November 2013 shows the district has a $15 million balance on hand.

Cochran also presented the board with the task of accepting one of four quotes that were received for projects that will keep the district in compliance with the American’s with Disabilities Act.

She said there are several projects set across the district to increase accessibility for disabled students.

“Four quotes were received with the lowest bid being $565,000,” Cochran said.

Board member Pat Lowery moved to table the proposal pending clarification on some of the details of ADA projects and keeping with state law.

Cochran said her office conducted a survey of employees after some expressed a need for the district to look at different insurance carriers.

“We found that our employees wanted us to look into new insurance carriers,” Cochran said. “We appointed an insurance committee at all school sites and we are looking at Aflac and Humana with attention to carry-overs of medical reimbursement.”

In other business, board members:

• Approved of donations made to Brookhaven High School and Lipsey School in the amount of $500 each from Craddock Oil/Exxon Mobil Corporation to be used for their math and science programs.

• Accepted the donation of $3,575 for chairback reimbursement and $1,600 for charter bus reimbursement from the Gridiron Club.

• Approved of the technical school’s carpentry class fundraiser. Students will build a variety of handmade woodcrafts to sell to the public.

• Approved of the track team’s fundraiser at Alexander Junior High. Team members will sell snacks at break time.

• Accepted the proposal to add a bus turnaround on Crane Trail.

• Accepted a list of personnel for review presented by interim superintendent Stephanie Henderson.
