WESSON – The Wesson Cobras were upset by the Lawrence County Cougars Tuesday night in Wesson. The Cougar varsity boys team outplayed the Cobras with a final score of 66-53. The Lady Cobras were unable to defeat the Lady Cougars and ended up losing 45-21 at the Snake Pit.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said Lady Cougars coach Vicki Rutland. “I have a lot of respect for the other team.”

The Cobras play at home again Friday night, Dec. 6, against the Sumrall Bobcats. Varsity teams begin play at 6 p.m. for the girls and the boys play at 7:30 p.m.

Lawrence County returns home to host the Tylertown Chiefs Friday night. The girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Lawrence County 45, Wesson 21 

The Lady Cobras led Lawrence County during the first period, but the Lady Cougars shut down Wesson’s offense and refused to let them gain hardly any more points for the rest of the game.

Freshman Haven Johnson led the Lady Cougars with a point total of 13, which included one 3-pointer and aggressive rebounding skills. Sophomore Deneisha Dickson followed closely with a total of 12 points. The Lady Cougars were 13 of 19 in free throw action.

For the Lady Cobras, sophomore Madison Coleman scored two 3-point shots leading Wesson’s offense with six points. Sophomore Jashia Smith followed closely with a five points. Freshman Alaysha Vaughn led the Cobra defense with most of the rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 6 of 18 in free throw action.

Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the loss by stating, “We played well in the first quarter, but foul trouble put us in a bind. We have had a few key injuries, so depth killed us tonight. My freshmen guards did get to get some much needed game experience, but overall the girls let the absence of their teammates get to them, and it showed.”

Lawrence County 66, Wesson 53 

The Lawrence County Cougars, led by powerhouse freshman KeyShawn Feazell, ended the Wesson Cobra winning streak with a final score of 66-53. Feazell had an impressive offensive showing of 21 points, which included several crowd-pleasing slam dunks and one 3-pointer. He also utilized his impressive height to lead his team in rebounding, blocked shots, and steals.

Junior Keith Davis scored nine points and sophomores Gaylin Pittman and Phillip Moore followed with a total of eight points each.

The Cougars had an average of 1 of 8 in free throw action.

For the Cobras, junior Farrod Green led the offense with a point total of 14 and six rebounds. Junior Mack Smith had 10 points and was a top defender with seven rebounds. Junior Tyler Christmas added 8 points to the score, also.

Anthony Jones, Cobra sophomore, scored 6 points, which included two 3-point shots, and seven rebounds. The Cobras were 5 of 12 in free throws.

After the game, Coach Rusty Newman commented, “We came out with a lot of intensity and played fairly well in the first half. In the second half, they wanted it more than us.

“The cougars out-hustled us and out-rebounded us. That was definitely the determining factor in the game.”

He continued, “We have got to do a better job of rebounding the ball and not allowing other teams to shoot 2 or 3 extra shots. We will regroup and get ready for our next game.”

In junior varsity boys’ action,  the Cobras suffered a disappointing 44-12 loss to the Cougars.

Freshmen Jermaine James and Eric Rhymes and Sophomore Landon Lewis all scored four points each. Rashad Haynes was the top scorer for the Cougars with a point total of 10.
