BA wins opener

Brookhaven Academy kicked off its 2013-2014 soccer season with a 1-0 win over their neighbors from the north, the Copiah Academy Colonels, Tuesday night.
The first half was a defensive battle that ended in a scoreless tie, thanks to some timely saves by goalkeeper Lamar Lang.
The Cougars appeared to take the lead early in the second half on an apparent goal by forward Trent Nettles, but the goal was waved off on an offsides call.
BA finally broke the deadlock with a penalty kick goal from midfielder Grant Melancon with five minutes to go in the game.
The defense maintained the lead to secure the win for the Cougars and improve their record to 1-0.
BA was led on defense by Jordan Lea, Cody Thornhill, Zach Dickerson, Newt Riley, Trent Cannon and Lamar Lang.
In JV action, BA suffered a 5-1 defeat. The Cougars’ lone goal was scored by Connor Griffin.
Brookhaven Academy’s next game is home against ACCS on Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.
