The Lincoln County community will be honoring and celebrating Veterans Day this year with a number of scheduled events Monday, Nov. 11.

The day will culminate with a Veterans Day ceremony at the Lincoln Civic Center, where Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves will be the quest speaker. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

In addition to honoring area veterans, the civic center event also will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Military Memorial Museum, located on Whitworth Avenue in downtown Brookhaven.

“The key theme running throughout the event will be recognition of our veterans,” said Sen. Sally Doty, who plans to be in attendance for the civic center program.

Some of the photos and other memorabilia from the museum will be put on display at the civic center Monday.

Knives handed out and stamped with the Japanese emperor’s stamp to Japanese soldiers will be on display, as will items from Nazi Germany and other artifacts from every major war since the Civil War.

In addition, larger military displays also will be set up.

“We are going to have an M20 light armored tank at the center and other vintage military vehicles,” said Chad Smith, museum board chairman.

The displays at the civic center will open at 4:30 p.m., and the veterans’ recognition program will start at 5:30 p.m.

In other area events Monday, Enterprise Attendance Center plans to feature an 8:30 a.m. buffet-style breakfast for local veterans, followed by a 9:30 a.m. program held in the gym.

Brookhaven Academy will present its Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. in the school gym. Mississippi State Treasurer Lynn Fitch will be the guest speaker at the event.

West Lincoln Attendance Center will hold its annual Veteran’s Day program at 9 a.m. in the Jack Case gymnasium. Army Col. Amos Philip Parker Jr. will be the guest speaker.

All veterans are invited to attend the events.
