Randall Huffman has resigned as the head coach for Loyd Star football after four seasons of service.

Huffman submitted the resignation as head coach Monday afternoon to Loyd Star principal Robin Case.

“After 36 years coach Randall Huffman has decided to hang up his own cleats,” said Case. “We have appreciated everything he has done for Loyd Star and the community. He is great team player on and off the field

“While he has resigned his coaching responsibilities,” continued Case. “He will remain a part of the Loyd Star staff.”

Huffman met with his varsity team Monday afternoon and his junior high team Tuesday to inform them of his resignation. Huffman posted a 6-20 record in his tenure as the Hornets head coach.

Case said that the current coaching staff of Jared Britt, Seth Britt and Dustin Sisco will take on the football responsibilities for the remainder of the season

Huffman, 62, inherited a rebuilding program in 2010, when former coach Ryan Ross left to accept another head coaching job at Ocean Springs after a successful 10-2 state playoff season in 2009.

As defensive-minded coach, Huffman served five years as defensive coordinator at Brookhaven on Greg Wall’s staff. He also coached boys and girls track at BHS. He was head coach at Hazlehurst and South Pike for 10 years each.

A 1969 Hazlehurst graduate, Huffman played football and competed in the pole vault at Delta State University. He played quarterback until a recurring shoulder injury changed his focus to track.

He was an All-Gulf South Conference pole vaulter and Delta State’s MVP in 1974. He graduated with a degree in physical education.

Huffman and his wife Tammie live near Hazlehurst. They are the parents of two grown children, LaRanda and Jason. They have two granddaughters.
