Services for Joe Smith, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.31 at Greater Mt. Olive M.B. Church with burial in the churchcemetery.
Visitation is today from noon until 7 p.m. with family presentfrom 6 to 7 p.m. at R.E. Tyler Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith, 68, died Jan. 28, 2006, at Countrybrook LivingCenter. He was born on July 24, 1937, to Jesse Smith and Mary CainSmith.
He was a retired educator from the Brookhaven Public Schools andthe Liberty Public School systems. He was a graduate of JacksonState University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree anda Master’s Degree in Science Education. He taught chemistry,physics and general science. He was a member of Greater Mt. OliveM.B. Church where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. He wasalso a member of Reaching Out To Another Person (ROTAP) outreachministry. He loved to tell funny puns.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, RolandSmith; and his sisters, Atrice Hilliard, Annie Ruth Boston andDoris Tyner.
Survivors are his wife, Artherette Thompson Smith, ofBrookhaven; his daughter, Vonda Smith, Ph.D., of Washington D.C.;his brother, Elkener Smith, of Brookhaven; and his sisters, VelmaSmith Lee and Massaree Lewis, both of Brookhaven.
