High-speed chase ends in one arrest

The Mississippi Highway Patrol was involvedin a high-speed chase Saturday night that concluded in LincolnCounty after a driver fled from a routine speeding stop in FranklinCounty.
Jeffery Ryan Johnston, of McComb, was traveling westbound onHighway 84 when an officer attempted to pull him over for speeding,said Rusty Boyd, MHP Troop M public relations officer.
The 25-year-old Johnston allegedly fled and a chase began at 10:26p.m. at an unidentified point on Highway 84 in Franklin County. Asecondary patrol vehicle joined the initiating officer during thepursuit.
The chase ended at 10:45 p.m. in Lincoln County at Exit 38 onHighway 84 when Johnston finally came to a stop. The top speedrecorded during the chase was 130 miles per hour.
No injuries were reported, but when Johnston stopped he hit anddamaged one of the patrol cars pursuing him, according to theincident report.
Besides Johnston there was a female passenger in the vehicle and achild of unknown age. The vehicle’s other occupants were notidentified.
Johnston was charged with a lengthy list of violations: DUI, felonyfleeing, speeding, child endangerment, no driver’s license and noproof of insurance.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, no bond hasbeen set and Johnston is listed as being “held for judge.”
Boyd said such pursuits are not frequent.
“It does happen, but not that often,” Boyd said.
