Glenda Fay Bailey Stevens
Services for Glenda Fay Bailey Stevens, of Lawrence, Kan., will beheld at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Brookhaven Funeral Home onNorth Jackson Street with burial in Rosehill Cemetery.
Visitation is Tuesday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Stevens was born on Aug. 1, 1938, in Brookhaven, the daughterof Isaac Lott and Lenni Louise Tournage Bailey. She married Paul W.Stevens, June 3, 1959, in Brookhaven. She moved to Lawrence in2003.
She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics at MississippiCollege, Clinton, and a Bachelor of History degree at the LouisianaState University of New Orleans, New Orleans, La. She earned aMaster of History degree at Southwest Missouri State University,Springfield, Mo. She later earned her Master of Library Technologydegree at North Texas University, Denton, Texas, and completedseminar work toward a Ph.D. in History at Tulane University, NewOrleans.
Mrs. Stevens lived from 1961 – 1982 in New Orleans (with a briefresidence in Bolivar, Mo., from 1969-71) and taught Home Economicsat Capdau Junior High School and was a historian at the AmistadResearch Center at Dillard University. In New Orleans, she was alsoan archivist for the New Orleans Historic Collection. In 1982, shemoved with her husband to Jackson and worked until 1988 as anarchivist for the Mississippi Historical Collection.
In 2003, Mrs. Stevens retired from a 13-year career as thearchivist for the Speaker of the House Jim Wright Collection atTexas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas. From 2003-2004, Shewas an archivist for the Bob Dole Collection at the Dole Instituteof Politics at the University of Kansas.
After her second retirement, she was highly active, taking care ofher grandkids, and as a volunteer archivist for the First BaptistChurch, where she was a member and she also served on themembership and building committees. She volunteered as an archivistfor the Richard Schiefelbusch Collection at Life Span Institute atthe University of Kansas. She greatly enjoyed being a member of theUniversity Women Club of the University of Kansas and helping as avolunteer for the Mother to Mother program in Lawrence. She enjoyedreading, and antiquing and is known for her lovely, gentle nature.After retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling to theBritish Isles and on summer trips with their daughter and herfamily.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Dr. Paul W. Stevens; sonand daughter-in-law, Andrew W. and Jennie L. Stevens, of Traveler’sRest, S.C.; and daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Pippa S. and Davis P.Loupe of Lawrence; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald Lott and IleneBailey, of Clinton. Her grandchildren include Benjamin, Brynna,Linnea and Micah Stevens, of Traveler’s Rest, and Eddie and PaulLoupe, of Lawrence.
