Wesson teams ambush St. Joe’s Bruins

WESSON -Junior guard Hunter Hood pumped in a game-high 29 points(5 treys) and grabbed 6 rebounds Tuesday night to direct the WessonCobras to an 81-73 Region 6-2A win over the Madison St. JoeBruins.
In the varsity girls game, Lady Cobra head coach Hugh Webb wason the bench to lead his girls in a 73-24 victory over the LadyBruins.
Wesson entertains region foe Enterprise Friday night for fourgames, beginning with the junior varsity girls at 4 p.m., followedby the JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
Wesson 81, St. Joe 73
In the final frame, the Bruins cut the deficit to 9 pointsseveral times but could not get any closer than 8 at the buzzer.With 21 seconds left, Jalen Davis hit a 3-pointer to cut thedeficit to 79-71 but Wesson’s D.J. Coleman netted a pair of freethrows to push the lead up 81-71.
With the win, Wesson improved to 2-0 in the division and 6-10overall on the season. St. Joe fell to 0-2 in division play and 8-5on the season.
“This was a huge win for us coming off the holidays,” saidWesson boys coach Ron Kessler following the win. “We got hugeoffensive play from Hunter Hood and D.J. Coleman.”
Coleman, a junior guard, fired in 24 points and blocked 3 shotsfor the Cobras. Kyle Cross netted 12 points, pulled down 6 reboundsand had 4 assists. Tyler Lumley finished with 10 points and 6rebounds.
The Bruins, coached by Scott Pughsley, were led by Nick Pernellwith 20 points before he received his second technical foul andejection from the game with 7:04 remaining. Jalen Davis fired in 18points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Scoring 10 points was RaphaelJohnson.
Wesson 73, St. Joe 24
The Lady Cobras (13-4, 2-0) took advantage of the Lady Bruins(3-10, 0-2) for a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and a 40-9 lead atthe half.
“We were able to get everybody in the game,” said Webb. “I wasreal pleased with out starting five’s effort. We got the efforttonight.”
It was Webb’s first game back since he underwent a quadrupleheart bypass last month.
Senior guard Ann Shelby Davis anchored the Wesson girls with 19points, 10 rebounds (double-double), 4 steals and 3 blocked shots.Ansley Schimmel fired in 17 points. Shauntay Walker netted 10points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The Lady Bruins, coached by Steve Barnes, were paced on AriannaCongin’s 8 points.
Junior varsity boys
Wesson knocked off St. Joe 36-22, powered by James Clay with 14points followed by Coleman with 8.
St. Joe got 10 points from Denarius Odell 10.
