Lady Panthers stun Lawrence Co.

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers pounded out 14 hits, played soliddefense and scored runs in bunches; defeating Division 6-4A rivalLawrence Co. 10-1 at the Lady Panther Complex.

Brookhaven travels to Traceway Park in Clinton on Saturdaymorning for the Clinton Invitational Tournament. The Lady Panthers’first game is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Lawrence Co. continues inDivision 6-4A play, hosting McComb Tuesday and MendenhallThursday.

Both Ole Brook (7-4, 3-1) and Lawrence Co. (5-3, 2-1) playedsolid defense during the first 3 innings. It would be in the bottomof the fourth, where the first signs of offense were shown byBrookhaven.

The Lady Panthers, coached by Lisa Covington, erupted for 5 runsin the innings. Hannah Lowman, Brianna Ashmore, Cary Anne Rake,Jordan Beeson and Sarah Ayers scored, as they were aided by 3 LadyCougar errors.

Covington’s squad got a pair of runs in the fifth from Ashmoreand Stevie Wright. Lowman, Christi Martin and Wright scored in theseventh.

“We played really well tonight,” said Covington. “Good winfollowing the Florence game. Covington was referring to herballclub’s loss at division foe Florence Tuesday.

Leading the Ole Brook offensive was Terri Hodges with 2 singles,a double and a triple. Wright and Rake each had 2 singles and adouble. Ashmore singled twice. Also hitting safely were Lowman,Martin, Ayers and Kelsey Freeman.

Lawrence Co., coached by Jill Haney, got its lone run in the topof the sixth. Bridgee Williams doubled. With 1 out, Ashley Jonessingled. Shaina Starks grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoringWilliams.

“We did not play defense after the fourth inning,” said Haney.”One error eventually led to another.”

Ashmore picked up the win for Brookhaven, while Williamssuffered the loss for the Lady Cougars.
