Three Wesson officials can rest easy with municipal electionscoming up Tuesday, but officials in the Wesson city clerk’s officehope to see a big turnout for the other three spots up forgrabs.

Wesson Mayor Alton Shaw, Ward Two Alderman John Welter andAlderman at Large Van Graham are all unopposed, said City ClerkLinda Dykes.

Dykes said she thinks the elections on the ballot will bringvoters to the polls, however.

“You know, we should have a good turnout,” she said.

In Ward One, incumbent Kenneth Roberts will face challenger MikeDouglas, and voters will choose between incumbent Bobby Britt andCivil Defense Director Randle Drane to be their representative inWard Four.

Ward Three, however, is a wide-open race afterlongtime-incumbent Lura Greer announced earlier this year that shewill not run for re-election. The post will go to either BillyEllison, Dr. Kate Hampton or Patricia Carlisle.

Dykes said that even if there is a strong turnout, she hopes heroffice will have ballots certified fairly quickly after they’re allin.

“They’ll be certified by Wednesday, barring any unforeseencircumstances,” she said. “We’re using paper ballots and will countimmediately after the poll closes, so we should have them readywithin an hour or an hour and a half.”

Wesson, like many other municipalities in the area, did not haveprimary elections because it is not quite large enough forpolitical parties.
