Lawrence Co. bags first division victory

FLORENCE — Lawrence County and Florence halved a varsitybasketball doubleheader Tuesday night. The games had identicalscores as the Florence girls defeated Lawrence County, 58-54 andthe LCHS boys edged Florence by the same margin.
The injury-depleted Lady Cougars gave it a good fight, and led31-30 at the half. Florence, powered by Hope Moore’s 24 points,took over in the third quarter, then held on in the fourth. JasmineTrigg added 13 points for the Lady Eagles, and Amanda Robinson had10.
Alex Scott-Newsome led Lawrence County with 18 points. FiereBrown and Brittney Collins also netted double figures, with 13 and11 points, respectively.
Coach Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars fell to 7-16 overall, and 1-5in Division 6-4A play. Florence improved to 8-13.
In boys action, the LCHS Cougars avenged aDecember loss to Florence and gained their first division win ofthe season. It was a tight game throughout, tied at 43-43 afterthree quarters.
While Lawrence County shot poorly from the free throw line,making just 8 of 18, it was Florence’s monumental free throwstruggles that cost the Eagles the game. Florence made just 15 of36.
Ladarius Jenkins (13), Willie Toney (11), and Rio Martin (11)evenly shared the scoring load for Lawrence County.
Nate Amos led Florence with 16 points. Ken Jones added 11.
Lawrence County returns home to face Mendenhall Fridaynight.
