The Wesson boys made a run at the Enterprise Yellow Jackets inthe final two minutes of play Friday night. Enterprise senior guardPierre Harthorne answered the challenge and slammed in a putbackthat put the Jackets ahead of the Cobras by eight points, 63-55with 1:49 left to play.

Wesson cut the deficit back to five points, 65-60, on a threepointer and pair of free throws by senior guard Richie Miller with1:17 left to play. The Jackets spread the ball out on offense andran time off the clock as the Cobras final shots bounced off therim.

In the girls game, the Lady Jackets’ bench got plenty of work inhanding the winless Lady Cobras a 60-30 beating.

The Enterprise boys (5-3)jumped out to an 18-13 lead over Wesson (1-8) in the first quarter.At the half, the Jackets had pushed their lead to 12 points,39-27.

“We couldn’t get it to fall when we needed it,” said Wesson headboys basketball coach Billy O. Britt following the game. “I waswell pleased. Our rebounding and defense was better. Enterprise hasa very good team.”

Wesson came out in the third quarter and hit a hot streak,outscoring Enterprise 18-7 to cut the deficit to one point, 46-45,going into the final frame.

“We didn’t play as aggressive as we have been playing,” saidEnterprise boys coach Billy Vaughn. “The boys have been playinghard the last couple of weeks. We weren’t aggressive as we havebeen.”

Senior guard Rufus Allen powered the Jackets with 17 points.Kary Brown netted 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had sixassists. R.C. Johnson followed with 11 points. Shermaine Vaughnfinished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and a blockedshot. Pierre Harthorne grabbed eight rebounds and made four steals.Billy Reeves also blocked a shot.

The Cobras got 14 points from Miller. Marcus Corley fired in 13points and Roderick Clay contributed 11 points.

The Lady Jackets (7-1) took a 19-8 lead overthe Lady Cobras (0-10) at the end of the first quarter and pushedtheir advantage to 31-13 at the half.

“The girls did play pretty well,” Vaughn stated.”Everyone got to play. The bench did a good job.”

For Enterprise, Lacey Palomarez led the way with 15points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Andrea Harthorne had 11points and made four steals. Ashley Harthorne collected sixrebounds and had four assists. Making four steals and four assistswas Joyce Allen.

“Enterprise has quick athletes,” said Wesson girls coachScott Johnson. “Enterprise is more aggressive.

“I was proud of the girls. We accomplished some thingsbetter. Our team is getting a little better.”

Leading Wesson with nine points was senior forward KailBaldwin. Maggie Johnson scored eight points. Anna Johnson led offthe backboards with six rebounds.

Junior varsity results

The Enterprise girls roared past Wesson 48-11. DeannaAlbritton. paced the 1-1 Lady Jackets with 17 points. AshleyPalomarez finished with eight points.

Wesson got four points apiece from Millie Smith andRachel Ryan.

Enterprise will host MSD following the holidays onThursday, Jan. 10, 2002. Two games are scheduled.
