Mother, son killed in collision

MONTICELLO – A head-on collision claimed the life of aMonticello woman and her 7-year-old son Wednesday evening,officials said.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Sgt. RustyBoyd said Amanda M. Harvey, 28, of Monticello, and her son ColeHarvey were traveling southbound on Highway 27 a little over fourmiles south of Highway 84 Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. when they werestruck by another vehicle that had swerved over into theirlane.
Boyd said Harvey’s 2005 Chrysler Pacifica was hit head-on by the2000 Ford F-150 driven by Rickey L. Cook, 48, of Brookhaven, beforeit came to rest off the east shoulder of the road.
Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said both Harvey andher son, who was sitting in the passenger seat, were pronounceddead on the scene.
“Both of them were pinned in the vehicle, and the Jaws of Lifewere needed to get the little boy out,” Fortenberry said.
He said both Harveys, who were unrestrained, were killedinstantly. Cook was wearing his seat belt.
Boyd said Cook’s truck was traveling north in the southboundlane when Harvey swerved into the northbound lane to try to avoidit.
“For some reason, he moved back to the northbound lane whereboth vehicles hit head on,” Boyd said.
Authorities said Cook had moderate injuries that were notlife-threatening and was transported to Lawrence CountyHospital.
The accident, Boyd said, is still under investigation.
Fortenberry said Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello is handlingthe funeral arrangements for Amanda and Cole Harvey. They areincomplete.
