Wesson girls prevail 31-29; W. Lincoln rally sinks Cobras

WESSON – Junior forward Kail Baldwin netted two free throws inthe final eight seconds to break a 29-29 tie and give the WessonLady Cobras a tough 31-29 win over the West Lincoln Lady BearsTuesday night.
In the varsity boys game, West Lincoln overcame a 16-13 halftimedeficit with a 21-2 run in the third quarter to take home a 47-38victory over Wesson.
Wesson 31, West Lincoln 29
The Wesson girls (1-1) got their first win of the season lastnight. The Lady Cobras led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter andtrailed the Lady Bears 15-12 at halftime. Going into the finalframe, West Lincoln enjoyed a 22-19 edge before Wesson went on a12-7 run to pull out the win.
“We made the plays at the end to win the game,” said Wessongirls coach Lane Young.
Powering the Wesson girls with 10 points was senior guardJessica Phillips. Baldwin finished with seven points.
For 2-3 West Lincoln, sophomore guard Dana King led with ninepoints and six rebounds. Hanna Roberts made six steals.
“We played hard,” said West Lincoln girls coach Jason Case. “Thegirls played with a lot of heart.”
West Lincoln 47, Wesson 38
In the boys game, Wesson led West Lincoln 9-7 at the end of thefirst quarter and 16-13 at halftime. The Bears came out in thesecond half and exploded to take a 34-21 lead over the Cobras goinginto the fourth quarter.
“We came out a little flat in the first half,” said Case.”Wesson outplayed us in the first half. We had a wakeup call. Itold the guys to step it up. Carlos Johnson and Kalis Fells playedgood defense. (Cody) Mitchell hit back-to-back three pointers.”
The Bears came out attacking in the third quarter, sparked bytwo consecutive three-pointers by Mitchell for a 34-21 advantagegoing into the fourth quarter.
“The intensity level was the difference,” said Wesson boys coachJimmie Nail. “We lost our intensity level in the second half.”
Bear guard Jamie Sisco led with 16 points and six assists.Mitchell pumped in 12 points and Johnson netted 11 points andpulled down 10 rebounds. Fells made six steals.
The Cobras were sparked by center Richie Miller with 14 points.Scoring 10 points was Roderick Clay.
Junior High Action
In the junior high boys game, West Lincoln (3-0) nipped Wesson36-32 in overtime. At the end of regulation, the teams weredeadlocked at 27-apiece. Directing the Bears with 17 points wasTyler Smith, followed by Shane Lynch with 16 points.
Blake Pickett led Wesson with 17 points. Scoring 10 points wasWade Williams.
The West Lincoln girls (3-0) thumped Wesson 34-14 in the juniorhigh game. Lauren Smith fired in 12 points for the Lady Bears.Britinee Smith followed with eight points and Alicia Kennedy withsix.
Megan Allen paced the Lady Cobras with eight points.
