Talk of sheriffs’ departments being allowed to run radar oncounty roads surfaces from time to time. Area sheriffs feel it’stime for the debate to stop and their use of radar to start.

Currently state law largely prohibits deputies from runningradar on county roads. One factor in many unsuccessful legislativeefforts to change the law has been that some officials contendradar would be used as a source of extra income by somedepartments.

“I’ll tell you now it’s not a revenue-generator, which has beensaid in the past by other people,” said Pike County Sheriff MarkShepherd. “To me it’s just like any other law enforcement tool, andwe would be using it to slow down drivers and save lives.”

Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones said he would be glad to seecounty law enforcement allowed to run radar on county roads.

“I think it would be a positive tool for law enforcement in thecounty,” he said.
