WESSON –Chance Peets’ infield chop in the bottom of the seventhscored Micah Davis with the winning run, as Wesson defeatedLawrence County 4-3 in high school baseball action Saturdayafternoon. That win was a positive start to a long day of baseballfor the Cobras, who were scheduled to play Piney Woods in adivision double-header right after the Lawrence County game.

With the win, Hugh Knight’s Cobras improved to 11-5 on theseason. Lawrence County, coached by Cory Keyes, fell to 18-5.

The game began with both teams playing a bit short-handed, asboth Wesson and Lawrence County had several players taking the ACTtest. Still, the teams produced a quality, competitive game.

Lawrence County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first asJohnathan Stephens had a double. Wesson tied it up in the bottom ofthe inning, when Daniel Watson doubled home Peets, who hadwalked.

The Cobras grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third, as Watson and Peetsagain in the middle of a scoring rally, with singles. One of theruns scored on a balk.

Lawrence County knotted the game in the top of the fifth, takingadvantage of 3 bases on balls, and a J.P. Lewis RBI single. Cougarreliever Jake Russell pitched out of a major jam in the bottom ofthe fifth. Wesson got the bases loaded with no outs, only to havePeets hit a wicked line drive that LCHS third baseman MackenzieWoods turned into an unassisted double play.

The visiting Cougars had the best chance to break the 3-3 tie inthe sixth, but a 6-4-3 double play ended that threat. Cobra aceCorey Puckett, having finished the college entrance exam, relievedBrett Selman in that inning.

Lawrence County hit into its third double play in the top of theseventh, then saw the Cobras push across a run to end it in thebottom of the inning.

Micah Davis reached base via a hit batsman to lead off theinning. He moved to second on a wild pitch, then was bunted tothird by Mason Warren. Peets’ chopper was then fielded by a divingWoods, but Davis beat his throw home to end the game.

Puckett got the win, with 1 and 2/3 innings of relief work.Selman worked 5 and 1/3 innings, limiting the Cougars to 4hits.

Lawrence County pieced the game together. Stephens pitched thefirst 3 innings. Jake Russell worked the 4th and 5th, and TrentHartzog finished the game. The loss was Hartzog’s first, after 6straight wins.

Watson and Brandon Hood led Wesson with 2 hits each. Peets andBrian Channell each had 1. Stephens, Lewis, Russell and ZacharySummers had hits for Lawrence County.
