Grant to help tennis association

The Brookhaven Community Tennis Association hopes to get a fewmore rackets swinging with the use of a grant that was recentlyreceived from the Mississippi Tennis Association, state affiliateof the United States Tennis Association.

BCTA President Leanne Summers said the grant, which is roughly$1,400, would be used to support various programs including JuniorTeam Tennis, league play and adult beginner groups and to helppromote the organization.

“This is what (allows) us to do the programs we do,” saidSummers.

The association has continued to grow since its beginning in2008. At the start, the organization had about 45 childrenparticipate in their Junior Team Tennis program and last year theprogram expanded to include roughly 81 young tennis players.

“We grow every year,” said Summers. “So, we expect an evenbigger (crowd) this year.”

The BCTA, which is operated by volunteers, conducts theirprograms on the Brookhaven city courts.

“It keeps you active,” said Summers. “It’s something you can dofor a lifetime.”

The organization will conduct adult beginner groups thissummer.

“As parents bring their kids to participate in Junior TeamTennis, they want to learn to play for themselves,” saidSummers.
