Bears, Hornets divide basketball

West Lincoln’s Hannah Knouse fired in 16 points, grabbed 5rebounds, made 4 steals and had 3 assists to lead the visiting LadyBears to a 46-22 Tuesday night win over the Loyd Star Hornets.
In the varsity boys matchup, Glenn Thomas pumped in 20 points,grabbed 5 rebounds and had 4 assists in sparking the Hornets to a61-39 victory over the Bears.
West Lincoln hosts Salem Thursday at 7 and 8:30 p.m. in itsfour-team tournament. Playing in the 4-5:30 games are Bogue Chittoand Dexter in Jack Case Gymnasium.
Loyd Star plays again Thursday, Dec. 10, in the Lincoln CountyRound-Robin Tournament at Enterprise. Loyd Star faces WestLincoln.
West Lincoln 46, Loyd Star 22
In the girls game, Karli Herrington had 10 points for WestLincoln (4-3). Katie Mullins collected 6 rebounds followed by KeriEasley with 5 as the Lady Bears roared to a 33-10 halftimelead.
“We played well defensively all night,” said West Lincoln coachLane Young. “In the second half, we went through the motions onoffense.”
For 1-4 Loyd Star, center Tyrisha Patterson led the way with 8points and 9 rebounds. Sarah Falvey grabbed 5 rebounds. Erica Smithcollected 6 steals and 3 assists.
“We did not play well,” said Loyd Star girls coach Billy Vaughn.”We were afraid to play tonight. West Lincoln has a good team. Wemissed too many shots in the lane.”
Loyd Star 61, West Lincoln 39
The undefeated Loyd Star boys (5-0) led West Lincoln (5-2) athalftime 23-21 in a close contest. The Hornets went on a 15-7 runto carry a 38-28 lead into the final frame. Loyd Star exploded fora 23-11 run to secure the win.
“We played better in the third and fourth quarters,” said LoydStar boys coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “We did not shoot well and wehad too many turnovers.
“We were rusty due to the holidaysm” Britt noted. “We weresloppy on defense in the first half, but we picked it up in thesecond half. West Lincoln played us tough.”
For the Hornets, Joseph Shelby followed with 16 points. Netting13 points was McKinley Hamilton. Julious Whittaker finished with 10points. DeAndre Butler made 9 steals and had 5 assists.
“We competed the whole game,” said Young. “We battled to theend. The final score doesn’t show how hard my guys fought to stayin the game.”
Jay Case led the Bears with 11 points. De Price had 8 points and4 rebounds. Tops off the backboards with 5 rebounds was CalvinKees.
Junior high action
Peyton Mullins and Bentley Sills netted 6 points each to leadthe West Lincoln girls in a 23-11 win over Loyd Star.
Kiara Humphrey led Loyd Star with 4 points followed by HaleySmith with 3 points.
In the boys games, West Lincoln thumped Loyd Star 42-25. Pacingthe Bears with 22 points was Sam Bivens, followed by Duane Marshallwith 9.
Loyd Star got 7 points from Anson Fox and 6 from CalebYarborough.
