Wesson stays alive in tourney

LAUREL – The Wesson All-Stars rebounded from a Sunday nightsetback to beat Greenville 6-2 Monday in the Dixie Pre-Majors StateTournament at Wooten-Legion Field. Wesson fell to Laurel/JonesCounty 12-2 Sunday. The tournament, for 15-16-year-old boys, isplayed under double-elimination rules.
Wesson’s all-stars resume play Wednesday night at 8, facing thewinner of tonight’s Meridian-Laurel/Jones County game, whichfeatures two unbeaten teams. Carthage plays Seminary at 5:30 in anelimination game. Meridian beat Carthage 8-0 and Seminaryeliminated Purvis 7-3 yesterday.

A home run and a double by John Birdsong powered Wessonpast Greenville. Ray Williams singled twice. Peyton Warren andJustin Kyzar singled.
Kyle Smith was the winning pitcher, with relief helpcoming from Justin Smith.
Laurel/JC 12, Wesson 2
Brett Jones of Laurel posted the win and Justin Sykes of Wessonabsorbed the loss.
Laurel collected nine hits. Wesson made seven errors and washeld to two hits. Powering Wesson with a single apiece were MatthewDelaughter and Kyle Smith.
