Panthers get revenge; Lady Panthers rip Hinds AHS

The Hinds AHS girls boasted four players who were 5-foot-10 ortaller. On Monday night, it was the smaller Brookhaven LadyPanthers who pulled out a 45-38 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

The Brookhaven Panthers had revenge on their minds as theyclaimed a 76-52 upset victory over the Hinds AHS Bulldogs inSinclair Gymnasium. Hinds AHS, ranked No. 10 in the latest JacksonClarion-Ledger newspaper poll, had defeated Brookhaven 85-84 inovertime, on Nov. 9 at Utica.

Last night Brookhaven blasted Hinds AHS 41-6 in the JV girlsgame.

The Brookhaven boys travel to Lake Charles, La., on Dec.27-30, to participate in the Bank One Classic. The Panthers willplay the host school, St. Louis Catholic, at 4:30 p.m., on Dec.28.

The Lady Panthers and Panthers return to action at BogueChitto, on Jan. 9, 2001.

The Lady Panthers (10-6) have put togethera 5-game winning streak, since a Dec. 1 loss to McComb. Brookhavenwas at a height disadvantage last night but hustle by the LadyPanthers on the boards was instrumental in the win.

Brookhaven led 11-8 after one period of play and 21-18 atthe intermission.

The Lady Bulldogs could not get any offensive momentumgoing. Hinds AHS’s Amber Watts, a 6-foot-3 Dandy Dozen senior, washeld to only 8 points. Hinds AHS found itself in a 29-29 deadlockat the end of the third.

Lady Panther Ayana Tillman gave the Lady Panthers the leadfor good, 38-35, on a layup. Shameka Gilmore followed with freethrows and Julianna Wallace scored a basket to help seal thevictory for Brookhaven head coach Ronald Gill and assistant coachTerri Hall.

Tillman led Brookhaven with 9 points and 12 rebounds.Wallace added 8 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals. Nikki Blakely had10 rebounds.

The Panthers (14-3) avenged the earlierloss to the Bulldogs this season. Both teams traded baskets earlyin the opening period, before Brookhaven took control; leading23-16 heading into the second.

Brookhaven’s Fred Mackabee, a 6-foot-1 junior forward,scored 12 points in the second quarter as the Panthers extendedtheir lead to 44-27 at halftime.

Mackabee finished the game with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2steals and 2 blocked shots.

In the opening moments of the second half, it seemed asthough Hinds AHS had lost its drive. The Bulldogs committednumerous turnovers that led to easy Brookhaven baskets. ThePanthers increased their advantage to 62-36, entering the finalstanza.

Brookhaven head coach Preston Wilson and assistant DanPresley emptied their bench as the Panthers realized the 24-pointfinal margin of victory.

Maurice Brown led Brookhaven with 18 points and 5 rebounds.Corey Bryant had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Dontae Dixon had 3steals and 4 assists.

Mario Tyler led Hinds AHS with 13 points.

In the JV girls game, Talita Dixon pacedBrookhaven’s victory with 16 points.
