Co-Lin wins two from Delgado

SUMMIT — Dartez Edwards sank a driving layup with 3.2 secondsleft to play, lifting the Co-Lin Wolves to a thrilling 70-68Tuesday win over the Delgado Community College Dolphins in theSouthwest Tournament. The Lady Wolves had an easier time of it,beating the Delgado women 59-47 as Renee Fields sacked 16 points inHolmes Gymnasium.

Co-Lin resumes play Thursday, Dec. 4, hosting Meridian CommunityCollege. The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the menat 7:45 in Mullen Gymnasium.

The Wolves (5-2) got 16 points from freshmanguard Ledell Eackles and 15 from sophomore center Derrick Jarvis tobeat Delgado, winning their third straight game. Jeremy Richardsonchipped in 11 points and Dexter Middleton 10.

Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims was happy to escape with a winbut saw plenty of room for improvement. “Defensively, we were slowand lethargic. We finally picked up play in the final sixminutes.”

Holding a narrow 33-31 halftime lead, the Wolves overcame 16turnovers in the game and a weak performance on the backboards.They were outrebounded 34-20 and made 26 of 58 field goalattempts.

Edwards, a freshman from Monroe, La., is one of several talentednewcomers playing for Co-Lin. He finished with 5 points. Delgadogot 14 points from Marcus Scott.

The Lady Wolves (4-3) also won their thirdstraight game. Fields scored 11 of her game-high total in thesecond half. They got 10 points and 7 rebounds from sophomoreforward Victoria Richardson. Lauren Williams grabbed 9 rebounds andGloria Lewis made 4 steals.

“Our guards did a good job of working the ball around and makingenough shots to open up the inside for our post people,” saidCo-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “In the first half we missed toomany free throws (5-of-15). We must take advantage of thoseopportunities.”

Young said Richardson and Williams rebounded the ball well. “Wehad good bench play in both halves.”

Delgado was led by Kenchasa Williams who accounted for 13 pointsand 9 rebounds.
