Co-Lin men’s tennis squad honored as No. 2 academic team in nation

WESSON – The National Junior College Athletic Association(NJCAA) has announced that Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s men’stennis team is the No. 2 Academic Team of the Year. The men’s teamhas finished No. 1 in 2002 and 2005, No. 2 in 2004 and No. 3 in2003.

“We are very proud of these student-athletes and theiraccomplishments,” said Co-Lin President Dr. Howell Garner. “We taketremendous pride in our student’s academic and athletic success,”he added.

The Co-Lin men’s tennis team, coached by Mike McIntyre, recordeda 3.37 grade point average. Members of the team are Giles Langston,Jeffrey Kitner, Jon Goldman, Phillip Hammond, and Cody Warren, allof Brookhaven; Tyler Smith of Smithdale, Corey Gemelli of Wesson,Dino Lovrin and Goran Samodajev, both of Zadar, Croatia.

Three other Co-Lin athletic teams, women’s tennis, baseball andsoftball also received Academic Team of the Year honors in theirrespective sports.

The Co-Lin baseball team ranked No. 4 in the nation AcademicTeam of the Year in baseball with a 3.22 grade point average. TheWolves, coached by Keith Case, have placed in the top five the lastfour out of six years. Members of the 2006 team are MatthewSchexnayder of Houma, LA; Joseph Langham, Ryan Williams, NickGunter, and Justin Smith, all of Wesson;, Xavier Qualls and ColeHodges, both of Brookhaven; Josh Logan and Kory Moore, both ofMagee; Garrett Jones of Natchez; Will Buckels of Meadville; MatthewTubbs of Georgetown, Derek Thompson and Dane Orders, both ofMendenhall; Brett Hartfield of Purvis, Adam Cook of Terry, RyanHoben of Vicksburg, James Landry of Patterson, La.; BrandonChretian of Lafayette, La.; Jeremy Boler of Philadelphia, ToddSiders of Hattiesburg, Joel Hurt of Clinton and Kyle Fairley ofYazoo City.

The Co-Lin women’s tennis team earned Academic Team of the Yearhonors, ranking sixth in the nation among women’s tennis teams witha 3.36 grade point average. The Lady Wolves, coached by BrendaSmith for six years and Holli Adams this year, have ranked in thetop 12 teams the past seven years, ranking No. 1 in 1999, 2003 and2004. Members of the team are Leah Bush of Pinola, LyndsayFranklin, Shara Johnson, and Julie Meacham, all of Brookhaven;Brittany Smith and Chanelle McCrory, both of Wesson; and KaseyParker of Hazlehurst.

The Lady Wolves softball team ranked No. 12 among softball teamswith a 3.32 grade point average. Members of the Lady Wolves,coached by Allen Kent, are Emily Horne of Pearland, Texas; LaurenSmith, Allyson Wallace, Megan Bateman, and Jessica Hart, all ofBrookhaven; Amber Beeson of Sontag, Jackie Stowe of Hazlehurst,Kaylin Burke of Ruth, Erin Douglass of Katy, Texas; Candice Braxtonof Bogue Chitto, Kady King of Brandon, Holly Pyles and AnnieSelman, both of Crystal Springs.
