Terry shuts out Panthers

TERRY – On Tuesday night, Brookhaven and Terry opened their3-game Division 6-4A series with a single game in southern HindsCounty. The home-standing Bulldogs were not gracious hosts,authoring a 5-0 shutout of the Panthers.
Terry pitcher Kyle Bridges set the table early by striking outthe game’s first 4 batters. He picked up the win, allowing no runson 2 hits. He issued no walks with 8 strikeouts in raising hispersonal worksheet to 5-0.
Brookhaven will conclude the 3-game set with Terry on Friday,with a doubleheader at Brookhaven’s Moyer Field. The first pitch isscheduled for 5 p.m. Free Panther t-shirts will be given to thefirst 50 paid customers.
Both pitchers threw outstanding games, going the distance.Bridges threw for Terry, while junior righthander Brooks Hall drewthe start for Brookhaven.
Hall suffered the loss for Panther head coach Randy Spring. Halltossed a complete game, allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits. He walked3 and fanned 6 Bulldogs hitters.
Terry (18-2, 10-0), ranked No. 2 in the state by a Jacksonnewspaper, flexed its muscles in the bottom of the third.
Bulldog coach Jerry Gibson saw his ballclub take a 4-0 lead.Second baseman Joey Shanks walked. Catcher Joe Allen reached on afielder’s choice. Shanks and Allen advanced to third and secondrespectively on a wild pitch. Bridges walked to load the bases.Centerfielder Lon Williamson doubled to center to score Shanks,Allen and Bridges. Williamson continued to third on a fieldingerror by the Panthers and would score on a passed ball.
“Brookhaven is not the overpowering club they used to be,” saidCoach Gibson. “They are fundamentally sound.”
Williamson added a solo homer in the fifth to provide the finalmargin of victory. Williamson paced Terry with a double, a homer,two runs scored and 4 RBIs. Brunson Durr singled and doubled.
“We didn’t play that bad,” said Spring following the game. “Wejust need to work on correcting the little things.”
Brookhaven (11-7, 7-3) got their only hits of the night withsingles from Hall, Corey Smith and Josh Anderson. The Panthers arein third place in the division standings with Terry and McCombstanding 1-2 in the division race.
