Lawrence County sweeps Port Gibson in 4A action

MONTICELLO — The Lawrence County Cougars and Lady Cougars swepta Division 6-4A basketball doubleheader against Port Gibson Fridaynight. The Lady Cougars provided the drama, clawing past PortGibson 48-41 in an overtime thriller. The Cougar boys then providedthe exclamation mark, hammering the Blue Wave 66-43 in dominatingfashion.

The Lady Cougars, coached by Vicki Rutland,improved to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the division, in dramaticfashion. Trailing 39-37 in the waning seconds of regulation,Lawrence County’s Jonika Walton scored to tie the game and send itinto overtime.

That was the biggest basket in what was a huge night for Walton,a transfer from Biloxi. For the game, Walton had game highs inpoints and rebounds, with 23 and 15, respectively. On top of that,she added 3 assists and 6 steals.

Erical Bryant also enjoyed a double-double for the Lady Cougars.She had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Katrina Wilson had 15 points to lead Port Gibson. Precious Bakeradded 10. Friday marked the opening of Division 6-4A play for PortGibson, which fell to 0-1 in both boys’ and girls’ play.

The LCHS boys raced to a 24-8 first-quarteradvantage and were never challenged. Senior center Craig Tyler hadanother big night for the Cougars, leading four Cougars who netteddouble figures.

Tyler had 23 points and 11 rebounds, along with 3 blocked shots.He hit 10 of 13 shots from the field. Jason Williams added 11points, 9 of which came on three 3-pointers. Justin Williams had 10points and 4 assists. Point guard Dominique West also scored 10,hitting 8 of 8 from the free throw line.

With the win, Bobby Lee’s final Cougar edition improved to 7-3overall, and 1-1 in the division.

Carlos Barnes and Karl Fleming led Port Gibson with 7 pointseach.
