Co-Lin splits with Southwest

SUMMIT – The Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears willkeep the Powerade Coca-Cola Classic Challenge Trophy in theirpossession for another year. The Bears rebounded from a 12-11 lossin Wednesday’s opener to beat Co-Lin’s Wolfpack 2-0 in the nightcapand deadlock the series 2-2.

“We are hitting the ball well right now,” said Co-Lin coach KeithCase. “We have had four straight good efforts from our pitchingstaff.”

Co-Lin (17-17, 6-10) and Southwest (19-15, 6-10) remain two gamesbehind Pearl River (7-7) and East Central (9-7) in the SouthDivision race for a hotly contested state playoff berth. JonesCounty (12-4) leads the South and Gulf Coast is second at (9-5).The top 4 teams advance to the playoffs. Hinds (5-11) remains inthe South cellar.

Co-Lin hosts East Central (22-14) Saturday for a South twinbill,starting at 1 p.m. in Sullivan Stadium.

Co-Lin 11, Southwest 10

In the to of the eighth, Co-Lin’s Dehendret Collins led off and washit by a pitch on a 2-strike count. Kolby Byrd singled to centerfield. Bud Britt drove in Collins for the lead. Willie Buckleyreceived an intentional walk to load the bases with no out.

After Byrd was forced out at home plate on an infield grounder,Bryce Guess delivered an RBI single to score Britt for an 11-9advantage. Britt collected 4 hits in the victory.

Southwest scored once in the eighth and left the tying run strandedat third base.

Co-Lin southpaw starter Ryan Kennedy gave up 2 hits and 5 Southwestruns in 5 innings. He struck out 1 batter, walked 3 and hit2.

Freshman Tripp Jolly (0 K, 1 BB) relieved Kennedy in the sixth. Hegave up 2 hits and 2 runs.

Freshman Cody Wall (0 K, 0 BB) pitched the seventh inning and gaveup 1 hit and 3 runs. He hit 1 batter as 2 unearned runs crossedhome plate.

Tyler Copeland (0 K, 0 BB) hurled the eighth inning and got thesave. He allowed 1 hit. It was his sixth save.

“We hit the ball well but we let them get back in the fifth,” saidCoach Case. “Ryan Kennedy pitched a good game.”

“Both teams kicked it around a little bit,” Case added.

Byrd, Zac Ferguson, Conner Oakes and Steven Capistran collecteddoubles. Southwest got doubles from Kyle Wheeler and Chance Schmidtand a triple from Philip Ingraffia.

Southwest 2, Co-Lin 0

Trey Setzer, a freshman southpaw, went 7 innings and notched theimportant win. He fanned 10 batters and walked none in the shutout.Setzer, a wiry 6-foot-5, 180-pounder, handcuffed the Wolves with avariety of pitches.

“Setzer was the difference in the game,” said Case. “He was reallyeffective. He has a hard slider and a changeup. He hides the balland you don’t see it until late.”

The Bears, coached by Lee Kuyrkendall, plated 1 run in the third,ignited by 3 hits. German Hays delivered an RBI single.

Raymond Winter allowed 7 hits in the loss. He struck out 3, walkednone and hit 1 batter.
