Family loses home in morning fire

A home was lost but lives saved early Wednesday morning when allthree Brookhaven Fire Department stations responded to a house fireoff Highway 550.

The home of Charles and Bette Dixon, at 404 Meadowbrook Road,was totally involved when firefighters arrived at the scene around4:25 a.m., said Firefighter Donald Sterling.

“The family living there got out and we’re not aware of anyoneelse being in the house, so it appears there were no injuries,” hesaid.

The Dixons were sleeping when the fire alarms went off and wokethem up. As they attempted to leave the house, their first exit wasblocked and they managed to escape by crawling through a window,according to the fire department.

Sterling said the fire appears to have started in the attic orceiling, but a cause has not been determined.

Only the family was saved, he said, noting the brick home was atotal loss in both structure and contents.

” There’s nothing left but some brick work,” Sterling said.”Every room, all the contents – it’s all gone.”

Firefighters were notified of the blaze by a 911 call made on acell phone between 4:15 and 4:25 a.m., Sterling said.

They did not return to the station until approximately 9:15 a.m.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
