MONTICELLO — The Lawrence County Cougars hammered the WingfieldFalcons 27-1 in an abbreviated Division 6-4A baseball game Tuesdaynight at Jimmie Davis Park. The homestanding Cougars racked up 27runs on 14 hits in just 2 innings of hitting, as the over-matchedFalcons conceded defeat after batting in the top of the third.

Lawrence County improved to 6-9 on the season, and 3-3 inDivision 6-4A play. Third-year Lawrence County coach Chris Clarkwas complimentary of his team’s effort in the lopsided contest.

“Obviously, Wingfield isn’t one of the stronger teams on ourschedule,” Clark said, “and I’m not sure you get anything out of agame like this. But I was proud of the way our guys took care oftheir business. They stayed as focused as could be expected in agame like this. I was also proud that we got to play a lot ofpeople.”

Every LCHS player got into the two and one-half inning game.Thirteen different Cougars got base hits. Trent Hartzog had 2first-inning singles. Jeremy Williams and Luke Watts whacked homeruns. Stevie Carr added a triple, while Taebyus Smith, J.P. Lewis,Corey Jones, Michael Thompson, and Zachary Summers had doubles.Marlon Stanfield, Mackenzie Woods, Klein Harbour, and Joseph Evansalso hit safely.

The Cougars scored 14 runs on 7 hits in the first inning, and 13runs on 7 hits in the second. Wingfield struggled defensively with10 errors.

Pitcher Casey Williams started for Lawrence County. Hesurrendered a leadoff double to Sylvester Cameron, who eventuallyscored on a passed ball. Williams struck out the next 7 batters hefaced.

Klein Harbour pitched the third inning, retiring the side inorder, striking out 1.

Cameron and Robert Mangum were the only Falcon hitters to putthe baseball in fair play.

Lawrence County will travel to Jackson to take on Jim HillFriday.
