Loyd Star in diamond wins over W. Lincoln, Cathedral

Loyd Star baseball coach Jared Britt was pleased with what he saw in the Loyd Star Classic. Senior pitchers Cori Crowe and Branden Canny both hurled complete game victories as the Hornets defeated West Lincoln 2-1 Friday afternoon and Natchez Cathedral 7-5 Saturday on rain-soaked Smith Field.
Loyd Star (2-0 resumes play Thursday in the Lincoln County Tournament at West Lincoln. The Hornets play Bogue Chitto at 4:30.
“Our defense and pitching looked real good,” said Coach Britt. “We have to hit the ball better.”

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Loyd Star to a muddy, 2-1 Friday win over West Lincoln.
On the mound, Crowe fanned 8 batters and walked none, allowing 7 hits.
Losing pitcher Brady Wilson struck out 6, walked 5 and gave up 2 hits.
The Hornets got 2 singles from shortstop Braden Smith.
The Bears got a sixth-inning, solo home run from Wilson and a double from Tanner Boutwell.

Canny, a senior right-hander, pitched the win against Cathedral. He struck out 10 batters and walked 6, giving up 3 hits.
Thomas Garrity (3K, 6 BB) absorbed the setback.
Sophomore third baseman Brett Calcote singled twice and tripled to pace the Hornets. Josh Hodges, Cori Crowe and Braden Smith doubled.
Catcher Ty Brown had 2 hits for the Green Wave.
