Brook turns back Wesson

The host Brookhaven Panthers held off the Wesson Cobras Tuesdaynight for a 12-11 marathon win in varsity baseball action at MoyerField. They combined for 21 walks and seven errors.
The Cobras remained 3-1 in Division 6-2A action and are 6-6overall.
Brookhaven resumes baseball play on Tuesday, March 24, hostingdivision foe Mendenhall. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m.,followed by the varsity at 7.
Wesson hosts Terry Thursday for a non-division doubleheader,starting with the JV at 5.
Going into the sixth inning, Brookhaven held a 7-3 lead overWesson. The Cobras exploded for 6 runs in the top of the sixth fora brief 9-7 lead before the Panthers clawed back, scoring 5 runs totake a 12-9 lead at the end of the sixth.
Wesson cut the deficit to 1 run, 12-11, in the top of theseventh.
“(Nick) Helmstetter pitched a good game,” said Brookhaven headcoach Randy Spring. “Then we struggled at the end. We’ve got toimprove defensively. We swung the bats well and we did what weneeded to win the ballgame. Wesson did a good job coming back.”
Brandon Foster was the winning pitcher in relief with 3strikeouts and 2 walks in relief. Starter Nick Helmstetter workedthe first 5 innings with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. Entering thegame in the sixth was J.D. Britt (1 K, 5 BB) who was replaced byFoster.
Zach Davis was the losing hurler with 6 strikeouts and 10 walks.Gage Wilson worked the final 2 innings with 1 strikeout and 2walks.
At the plate, Halliwell paced the Panthers with a double and asingle. Hitting safely were Gabe Wilson, Bud Britt, Jarvis Wilbert,Issac Jones and Helmstetter.
“We hit the ball well enough to win but didn’t field the ball,”said Wesson head coach Hugh Knight. “We did not make our routineplays. We had a chance to win but fell short. I’m proud of my kidsfor battling back.”
Wesson got a double and a single from Kyle Cross. Matt P. Smithdoubled. Chris Fink singled twice.
Junior varsity action
Wesson knocked off Brookhaven 8-6 in the JV game.
Josh Smith posted the win with 5 strikeouts and 7 walks. PatrickValentine fanned 1 batter and walked 1.
At bat for the Panthers, Dillon Newell and E.J. Hendersondoubled. Singling were Brandon Foster, Joe Patrick, Drew Jones andValentine.
Gage Wilson led the Cobras with a triple. Brandon Allen singledtwice. Hitting safely were Blake Tarver, Zach Stafford and JacobFischer.
