BOGUE CHITTO — Bobcat quarterback Seth Avants helped directBogue Chitto to a 48-37 offensive shootout with the EnterpriseFighting Yellow Jackets last Friday night on Troy Smith Field.Avants is just a sophomore.

Avants (5-10, 145) rushed the football 18 times for 150 yards, 4touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. He completed 7 of 10 passesfor 81 yards.

For his accomplishments, Avants is The DAILY LEADER’s OffensivePlayer of the Week for the 11th week of the 2006 footballseason.

“It feels good,” smiled Avants about the honor. But he creditshis teammates on offense, linemen and rushers/ receivers, with hissuccess.

“The receivers do a good job catching the ball and getting upthe field,” said Avants. They include wideouts Mario Addison andKeyouna Perkins and fullbacks Cole Laird and Byron Kersee.

“My line gives me enough time make the throws,” stated Avants.”They do a great job of blocking. They’re very dependable.”

Making up the offensive line are Robert Lewis, left tackle;Scotty Brown, left guard; Nic Noworyta, center; Trey Bales, rightguard and Fred Tillman, right tackle.

“Seth has had a really great year for us,” said Bogue Chittocoach Gareth Sartin. “He has definitely matured from last year.

“This year he is taking what the defense gives him. He hasreally improved. He’s a joy to coach. He does whatever I ask him todo.”

Avants also plays some on defense, working in the secondary inpass situations.

In regular season play, Avants has completed 96 of 172 passesfor 1,716 yards and 15 touchdowns. On the ground, he has rushed thefootball 120 times for 1,043 yards for 14 TDs and 10 two-pointconversions. His total is 2,750 yards and 29 TDs.

Avants runs a 40-yard dash in 4.7. He bench presses 165 poundsand squats 270 in the weight room.

“We have four good backs who can run it,” said Sartin. “Otherteams can’t concentrate on one player.”

Avants was happy to finish out the season with a win overEnterprise, but knows the Bobcats (6-5) have to play better againstunbeaten (10-0) Puckett Friday night in the first round of theClass 1A state football playoffs.

“I’ve played better games,” stated Avants of the Enterprise win.”Offensively, we did real well. The defense didn’t play toogood.”

Avants said he is excited to be in the playoffs again.

Injury wise, Avants says he has been lucky with only a minorankle injury during the season.

Avants said he appreciates the help from the Bobcat coachingstaff and his defensive teammates.

His parents are David and Tiffany (Reeves) Avants, both formerathletes at BC. His father played football and basketball. Hismother competed in softball and basketball. His older sister,Candace, played softball and basketball at Bogue Chitto. He has ayounger brother, Zach, and a younger sister, Mattie.

Avants says he gets advice from his parents. “My parents try togive me help back from their days of playing.”

Besides football, Avants plays guard for the basketball team. Inthe spring, he plays baseball and was a center fielder and shortstop last year.
