Co-Lin women struggle past Hinds

WESSON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves struggled offensively but theystill managed to beat Hinds Community College Monday in a fastpitchsoftball doubleheader. They rallied to win the opener 3-2 andposted an 8-0 shutout in 5 innings in the nightcap.
Co-Lin (6-2) resumes play today at 1 p.m., hosting John Wood(lll.) Community College.Thursday at Hinds.

Kady King drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventhinning to save the Lady Wolves. She finished with a double and asingle.
On the mound, Emily Horne dominated Hinds with a 13-strikeout,2-hitter. She walked none and hit 2 batters.
Horne took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and gave up aleadoff single. After a strikeout and a hit batsman to load thebases, Randy Green of Hinds lined a single off Horne’s knee and 2runs scored.
“We are simply not swinging the bat like we are capable ofdoing,” said Co-Lin softball coach Allen Kent. “This was anembarrassing win. We are not supposed to play Hinds that close.We’ve got to start have some people step up for us.”
In the bottom of the seventh, Annie Selman reached on an error.She stole second base and advanced to third on an overthrow. MeganBateman’s grounder to shortstop resulted in an error and Selmanscored to tie the game at 2-2.
Horne scored Co-Lin’s first run of the game in the third. Horneled off with a single to left. Selmon bunted for a single andBateman drove in Horne.
Co-Lin 8, Hinds 0
Co-Lin plated 6 runs in the first inning to give winning pitcherErin Douglass a cushion to work with. She struck out 6 batters,walked 3 and gave up 3 hits in the 5-inning shutout.
Bateman tripled in the first and scored on an RBI single byDouglass. Allyson Wallace, Candace Braxton and Lauren Smith loadedthe bases on 3 Hinds errors. Holly Pyles delivered and RBI grounderand Kaylin Burke slapped an RBI single.
“We stole nine bases on the day and played pretty good defense,”said Kent. “We also got strong outings from out pitchers.
“It keep saying it over and over again that our girls must bemore patient at the plate,” he continued. “We are having too manypoor at-bats.”
Kent said his team only collected 3 walks on the day.
